Baby Walkers .. Panic !!
Monday, March 27, 2006

I was browsing through the net looking at baby articles (my latest obsession) when i found this

"walkers are detrimental to normal development. Because the babies can get around too easily, their urge to move across the floor is satisfied, and many of them will not undertake the important task of crawling, creeping, scooting, or hitching. This stage is important for developing strength and coordination.

Many parents think that walkers will help children learn to walk. As it turns out, walkers interfere with learning to walk. In addition to decreasing the desire to walk by providing an easier alternative, walkers strengthen the wrong muscles. The lower legs are strengthened, but the upper legs and hips become relatively weak. The upper legs and hips are most important for walking.

Moreover, children in walkers have more accidents than their counterparts. Walkers often tip over when a child bumps into a small toy or the edge of a rug. They are also more likely to take a dangerous fall down a flight of stairs."

Since my son hit the 5 month mark i put him in the walker.. and he's becoming quite good in directing himself where he wants to go mashallah.. and now i read this.. so imagine the total panic i felt at this.. i even called my husband and he calmly said ,, don't put him in the walker so much.. and i was like i can't control the maid when i am at work.. so we reached the conclusion that we will go look for this

"For children who want to be upright, an exersaucer can be a nice alternative. These look like walkers, but without the wheels. They allow children to bounce, rock, spin, and sit upright -- without satisfying the urge to move across the floor. They are safe and developmentally appropriate"

i know i know.. first time parents and over protective i guess but what can i do.. i want the best for my son.. and who knows he might enjoy that exersaucer so its worth it..

i think i should stop reading too many baby articles !!

Haay Gurll.. Finally i registered .. Now will fire my comments every now and then ;) .. Ok so u talking about walkers.. ok b4 that.. i cant pretened that this is fst time i am commenting for u..actually this is 2nd time and as i am writting these words i feel liek screaming AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA coz honestly i wrote such a long one but coz of my smartness i lost it all :( ..anywayzz i was saying that its really funny a bit to see u liek this gurll.. talking and worrying as a mum ..same time its a coool warm feeling i feel to see u as a very very very caring mama :) ..Lucky baby dhom dhoom to have mama like uu ;) ..

Ok so walkers good or bad? I feel they r good n cool treat for babies but thats only if u r around n walking behind him n stopping any might-happen accidents! But if u r not around then dont depend on housekeeper n better keep them away..

For my baby first time he sat in walker he cried and wanted to get out! Just liek Car! at begining he hated ridding cars! Can u belive that! He hated going out of home! But now he is a very bad fast potential driver :S ..
When he got used to walkers he started moving so fast and enjoying teh max .. i was happy to see him so happy n having fun . he hit this wall and that wall.. his tiny neck and ahem much bigger head used to swing left and right, back and forth! and he will laugh and scream .. me too support him .. all of us actually.. till one day he got fever ! Ok u thinking wts the connection????.. Well His neck fall!!!!! Ok u laughing! hehe well i dont mean literally fall .. but u knw when i say "Raqabtuh 6a7at".. Well thats the expression which my dad uses ! He feels the neck a bit with his hands ,,rolls his fingers over the side of teh nek and then says either: Ok neck is fallen! or Neck is ok! !!.. so when baby got fever he did his usual check and result was: HIS NECK FALL! .. So how to treate?!! well dad massaged baby neck and really i felt baby was much better .. i think if talking in a bit more normal words wt happened was maybe coz of the swings and head going left and right back n forth ,, some tiny winy muscles of baby neck got streched or squeezed in a wrong way and that maybe caused the tirness and fever .. and when dad massaged it helped! ,,Anywayz point is that after this we all realsied that walkers are not as good as we thought! ..Although one can tell that from first time u see the baby hitting a wall n getting swinging but then maybe when u see baby laughing at same time u tend to think : oh well he is okkkk n enjoying himself!

So next action plan was to gradually take him away the walker after he got used to it .. n keeping it away from his eye site .. and it worked,, althu from time to time when he sees it, cries for it ,, and i do make him play a bit but i will be walkign after him .. but really i feel if u r not there then best not to let him play with it even if house keeper is there,, and get that similar one which is a stand still kind of a thng.. Only when u r around then let him have some fun but in a place wide open and try as much as u can to avoid hitting walls and things ,,

Babies make our lives so full ! with everythng ,, and everythng no matter how small turns so big and so important to take into our minds and think about when it is relates to our babies! How many times u sat and thought: oh the sides of this table are not curved enough,, too pointed! ..wait till your baby starts walking himself! and u will pay attention to the smallest thing in ur roooom or where he walks :)

Being mama is so hard .. and really its so hard soemtimes to control ur tempor but somehow u manage to do so ..only coz its ur baby!!!

Good luck to u gurl,, and to me ,, and too all who r mamassssss :)

lol ok Ferrero.. what a comment hehehe it took me a while to read that.. welcome to the blogging world and thanks for your comment.,,i guess as new mothers we tend to get overprotective of our kids and try to do the best..sometimes though a little letting go is better ..i try to put him in the walker for short times.. but keep him on the floor more.. balance is always good !!

Never heard of this before.. although it does make a lot of sense. All my brothers were in walkers for some time, the only danger we felt was them being able to get to places that were potentially dangerous (like fall down the stairs?) stuff like that.

hmmm... how true's that article?I wonder how could exercising ANY muscle be wrong... perhaps baby muscles are different?
I'm not sure but I know a doctor who's been dealing with babies for ages... I barely believe the damage is great...however if it concerns you use an alternative for now till the effects are confirmed..

i decided to take it easy actually... as long as he is supervised and he doesn't spend all day in it then he should be ok,, he made his first attempt at a crawl two days ago,, so i guess i can relax again lol
